Types of Yoga philosophy – Types of Yoga

Is there a book that explains yoga completely?
I’m looking for a book that covers all the different aspects of yoga as well as all the types of yoga. I just started doing what I think is called Astanga yoga. I am so confused though because there are so many different words to remember and different types of yoga (ie. plasha yoga, asana, and I can’t remember all the rest). I want something like an encyclopedia of yoga, so that I can learn about the philosophy, the types of yoga, the meanings of all the words, the history, the poses, the mantras, etc. I don’t want a book that focuses on just one type of yoga or on just one aspect of yoga. There are plenty of those. It’s like a wild goose chase trying to find the essential stuff to read. Is there a book that covers all of the yogas?

There will never be a book that completely explains yoga because it has such a long history. I do use two books, as a beginner, that I highly recommend since they cover a ton of poses and series which can be incorporated into your ashtanga yoga program.

The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga
The Sivananda Companion to Yoga: A Complete Guide to the Physical Postures, Breathing Exercises, Diet, Relaxation, and Meditation Techniques of Yoga

You can buy them both together on Amazon.com for about $24 and they’re really extensive for a beginner

and I want to correct it. What are some good poses (and for overall improved posture as well?) I know Cat and Cow are good, but what else?
Sonya, thanks. Child pose is one of favorites so that’s a treat for me. : )
Thank you Siri!

You need to practice neck lock to improve this posture. Try sitting with your chin tucked in slightly and you chest and heart moved forward a bit. Do not tilt your head forward and keep your muscles relaxed in the face.

Benefits of Yoga

What are the benefits of doing yoga?
I suffer from back problems (misalignment issues that cause muscle pain), foot pain, and a lot of anxiety and stress. I know yoga will probably help with these things, but how and is there anything specific I should do? How else can yoga benefit one’s health?

It’s hard to answer your question without knowing your specific back issue, but I’ll give you a few postures for the back, generally. Keep in mind that yoga should stretch and strengthen the muscles. It should not cause a sharp pain. If you have serious back problems you should check with your doctors to make sure you know what not to do before you attend a yoga class and let your yoga instructor know at the beginning of class.

Yoga has several twists that are great for the spine. You can sit in an easy sitting position (cross-legged Indian style) and, with your spine straight and all, twist from the base of the spine, then the waist, then the shoulders, then the head. So, if you twist to the left you are looking over the left shoulder, left hand on the ground directly behind the spine and right hand across the body on the left thigh, just above the knee. OR, you can do a lying spinal twist. Lie on your back with the left leg straight on the ground. Bend the right knee and hug it into the body. Then, bring the right knee across the body to the left and extend the right arm straight out on the ground to the right. The lower body twists to one side, the upper body to the other.

Back bends are also great. Try cobra, bridge, cat/cow. In cobra you lie on your stomach with the hands next to the chest. Arching the back, lift the head and chest while pushing the chest forward and using the back muscles. Keep the neck long and shoulders back. In bridge, you lie on your back with the knees bent and pointing toward the ceiling. Feet are flat on the mat. Press into the ground with your feet and lift the hips up to the sky. Cat/cow is the most basic. Start on all 4s, as you inhale, lift the tailbone, arch the back and look up, arching the back. As you exhale, do the exact opposite. Tuck the tailbone, bring the belly-button toward the sky, and look down, engaging the abdominal muscles and curving the spine.

In addition, lower back pain can be caused by tight hips and legs. Try warrior I and focus on stretching the front of the hip. This is good for the hip-flexor and psoas. Forward folds are also good for stretching the hamstrings.

Abs are also important to help with back problems. If the abs are weak, the back has to compensate.

The benefits of yoga are too numerous to list here but I’ll give you some of the highlights. There are physical, mental and spiritual benefits. The physical benefits include, but are not limited to, improved flexibility, circulation, breathing, cardiovascular conditioning, strength and pain management. Yoga also teaches people to take slower, deeper breaths, which activates the body’s relaxation response and lowers the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. As a result, yoga eases anxiety, depression, fatigue and insomnia. When the physical poses are combined with breathing and meditation, yoga also leads to a deep connection with spirit and peace of mind.

Hope this helps,

Yoga benefits sleep – Yoga benefits

What is the best yoga for weight loss?
I’m 14 and female. I want to begin Yoga classes but which is better for flexilibity?
Also which one would help me relax. I’ve been so stressed over school and everything that I can’t think straight anymore and I really want to improve for Judo.

I’ve never done yoga (for more then a few days…). I want to try bikram but I’ve heard you can’t breathe your first time and I’m kind of worried…which one do you prefer and which makes you sleep better/better benefits?

Power yoga is sort of like aerobics, very cardio-oriented and good for weight loss. Bikram yoga uses the same poses every class period and is performed in a room at 105 degrees F. It’s not for everyone, a lot of people don’t like it. Restorative yoga is good for relaxation and reducing stress.
